This is the original Byron Bay Tea Company (BBTC) that has been catering to the food service and retail industry for five successful years. Operating from their premises that is situated in the lush and green rolling hills of Byron Bay, BBTC now offers the full range of teas to suit all tastes and requirements- from your traditional English Breakfast to Japanese Quince or an exotic herbal tea blend like Calming.
Byron Bay Tea Company was founded in 2004 by Naturopath and Herbalist, Sarita Merlo. Inspired by a desire to create some tasty herbal teas- BBTC's signature organic herbal tea range was born. Consisting of Energy, Calming, Digest, Immunity and Detox- this is a collection of organic herbs that have been blended with other exotic and colourful, natural ingredients. By experimenting with form and flavour- BBTC has succeeded in creating herbal teas that are as tasty as they are healthy.
Following an overwhelming response from consumers, a traditional tea range soon followed. It proved as popular as its herbal predecessor and BBTC’s product lines have since prospered. The latest is the oriental tea range which was launched at this year’s Fine Food Show in Melbourne. It includes Oolong – a light, semi-fermented, whole-leaf tea, low in caffeine and high in antioxidants and digestive properties – and the poetically named Buddha’s Tears, which roll tenderly from the tea plant and are made with the bud and first two leaves. Carefully plucked and handcrafted into tiny pearls, they are then scented with fresh jasmine blossoms. According to Merlo, “the new oriental blends demonstrate a specialist approach to traditional teas and reflect the changing tastes of a more adventurous market”.
Merlo’s professional expertise has enabled her to take a time-honoured tradition and turn it into modern day practice. Plucking full-flowered ingredients straight from the garden, BBTC made an immediate impact on visitors to the local markets of Byron Bay and nearby Bangalow. The natural health hotspot had been quick to seduce Melbourne-born Merlo, who moved there in 2000 to pursue a career in naturopathy. It also became the spiritual inspiration behind BBTC, which was launched at the same time that consumers were looking beyond conventional coffee and teas.
Following an overwhelming response from consumers, Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat, Gaia Resort and Spa and Emirates Wolgan Valley Resort and Spa jumped on board followed by a number of enthusiastic stockists across Australia. BBTC now supplies a wide range of businesses with its quality teas and tea wares - from gourmet delis to health retreats, natural health centres, restaurants, gift stores and more.
